Morning at Santa Croce

Oil on linen
55x60cm

This may be a familiar place to most people who have visited Florence. Maybe not during the early hours of the day. The night before this scene was stormy, which left the ground wet. In my mind this symbolizes the aftermath of this very busy part of town, popular for nightlife. There was of course nobody around at this hour, only the street cleaners. The work done on the painting was fast, leaving the canvas in a sketch-like state. The light of the morning seemed to be creeping in fast so I had little time to work. I considered working more on the painting but I eventually opted out of it. I was scared of losing the effect of the transparent shadows, which give an impression of the piazza trying to hide itself from the light of day.
